Our U21 Football Championship got underway on Tuesday night last. As we are in a group of three, it was important to get a win in the first round. Make no mistake, this group of young men knew the job ahead of them. While at times it wasn’t pretty from either side, but it was a team effort from the rovers group.

Sean Cotter was the first to get an opening at a shot at the goalpost within 40 seconds of the throw in and put the ball straight over the bar. Callum Meagher score a second point from play from the opposite side of the field. In the 5th minute we lost Luke Fogarty to injury. Commercials opened their scoring with a point from a free and quickly added a second from play. The sides were all square. Substitute Brian O’Sullivan show no delay in getting up to the speed of the game and score a point minutes after coming into the game. We had a run of scored over the next 10 minutes of play, with points from Callum Meagher, Anthony Phelan, Riain Quigley and Brian O’Sullivan. Commercials scored a point in the 26th Minute. In the 28th Minute Brian O’Sullivan made a run at the goal, with his shot just going over the crossbar for another points. Commercials finished the half with a point and a player sin binned. Half time score Moyle Rovers 0-8 Commercials 0-4. We needed to up our game in the second half, if we wanted to win this match. Callum Meagher opened the second half with a point from play. 7 minutes into the half a great ball across the goal mouth, gave Luke Delahunty a fantastic ball to just punch into the back of the net. Commercials got their second half scoring underway with 3 points. We then lost Luke Delahunty to a sin bin for 10 minutes, so we now need to work. A lovely ball into Callum Meagher left him through one-on-one with the Commercials goalie, and Callum just slotted the ball in under the goal and straight to the back of the net. We scored an additional point before Commercials replied with a point. In the closing minutes Commercials got through for a much need goal, to leave just 5 points between the sides. Their comeback was short lived, as a save shot on goal, was eventually sent to the back of the net by substitute Kieran Quirke. Final Score Moyle Rovers 3-10 Clonmel Commercials 1-8. We now play Combination team Clonmel Óg/Ballyporeen, a win here would put us through to a south Semi Final.
