Ladies Football

Our U16s went to a sunny Sean Treacy Park in Tipperary on Sunday last for the County final against a strong and well organised Moyne Templetuohy side. Throw in was at 12 noon and in the first minute Eve Ryan took a fall and our first aider Mairead was quick into action.  Moyne Templetuohy took early control and soon had a penalty which they slotted away. This rattled our players and Moyne Templetuohy kept the pressure on and managed to get two more goals and a point. We found ourselves ten points behind having not played to our potential.   Kate Moore moved to centre field and neutralised their advantage whilst building our own attacks, leading to Sarah O'Connor getting the first of her three goals. Once Sarah's goal went in, all of our players from our goalie Hannah Mallekoote up to the forwards stepped up a gear. Now we were getting in tackles in and playing some lovely one twos which led to Sarah getting two more goals (one from a free). Then just before half time Louise Norris slotted over the bar to level things up.

The second half started and our purple patch continued. By the 43rd minute with the help of tireless and hard work from our forwards Lucy Holohan, Ellen Buckley and Dearbhla McDonagh, laying off some lovely passes to Louise and Sarah, we found ourselves in front by two points. Moyne Templetuohy then drew level. This game needed a bit of magic to separate the two sides and that came in the 48th minute with a brilliant bit of individual skill from Triona Ryan who received the ball on the halfway line, turned and took on her player, soloed and kept going until she blasted the ball into the back of the net to a tremendous roar. This made it 4-04 to 3-04 in Rovers favour. On came sub Mia Duggan to help out the forwards. Now it was backs against the wall stuff as Moyne Templetuohy piled on the pressure but with brave defence work from the back line of Claire Moylan, Grace Quinn and Tara McGrath and superb work from Ava Collins, Michelle Cronin, Robyn Tynan, Louise Norris and the ever running of Kate and Eve in centre field, they managed to dig deep and hold out Moyne Templetuohy. Moyle Rovers won with a scoreline of 4-04 to 3-06.  A well-deserved result for a hardworking group of girls and their mentors. County Senior Football Championship Group 2 Round 1 - MOYLE ROVERS 2-14 AHERLOW GAELS 0-6

A storming first half by Moyle Rovers in which they scored 1-9 without reply, set them up for a comfortable victory over Aherlow Gaels in the opening round of the County Senior Football Championship game played at Cahir on Sunday evening.

Beaten county finalists for the past two years, the Powerstown/Lisronagh club went about their business with intent from the throw-in and they had the West Tipp side chasing shadows on a glorious evening for football.

County player Liam Boland, who would finish the game with a personal tally of 1-8 opened, with a pair of sweet left footed points inside the first six minutes. The same player then bagged his goal nine minutes in when finishing a free-flowing move involving David McGrath and Diarmuid Foley – the pace of the move blitzting the Aherlow rearguard.

A well-drilled Moyle Rovers then dominated the rest of the half and in wave after wave of movement pinned Aherlow back. They realised early they had the legs of their opposition and took them on at each opportunity. Further points from play by Diarmuid Foley and Liam Boland (2) had the lead out to 1-5 to 0-0 on 17 minutes and on the rare occasions when Aherlow did break upfield, the Moyle Rovers backline led by Alan Campbell had the measure of the West Tipp side’s forwards.

Rovers introduced former Tipp inter-county player Sean Carey, back from Australia, in the 22nd minute (for the injured Stephen Quirke) and with first touch, after a pass from Ross Mulcahy, Carey pointed. His addition to the panel this year will give the Monroe side a tremendous boost.

Late points from Diarmuid Foley (after great work by Alan Campbell) and from Danny Owens after Gordon Peters had saved a goalbound shot from Liam Boland left Moyle Rovers 1-9 to 0-0 up at the break. It seemed the game was already over.

Aherlow introduced two subs at the interval bringing in John Moloney and Sean Kiely and they finally got on the scoreboard a minute after the resumption with a Barry Grogan free, won by John Hanley, their best performer on the night.

Any hope of a revival, or any doubt about the result, was put to bed just three mintues into the second half with a straight red card for Aherlow’s Seamus Grogan; referee John Butler making the right decision for a high tackle on David McGrath.

In a further blow a move out of defence by Aherlow in the 40th minute was turned over by Sean Carey’s industry and with lightning speed Liam Boland and Shane Foley combined before the latter blasted to the net for a goal which made it 2-10 to 0-1 as the night went from bad to worse for the Aherlow/Lattin combo.

But credit where it is due, Aherlow Gaels, as you would expect didn’t throw in the towel and responded with three points in a row from Barry Grogan. Following frees in the 44th and 46th minutes, Eoin O’Connell set up Grogan for their first point from play 48 minutes into the game.

Rovers’ Luke Boland then fielded magnificently around the middle and put Craig Condon on his way to point.
The last few minutes were purely academic but the West side did tag on a couple of good points from play with firstly Mark O’Brien from 30 metres and then Mark Russell from a similar distance, cancelled out by two from Sean Carey and Liam Boland. And finally, another free from Boland, his fourth of the night, after the impressive David McGrath was fouled, brought this disappointing contest to a conclusion.

Moyle Rovers will be glad of the win but will put it behind them quickly knowing sterner tests lie ahead. Ciarán Kenrick in goal wasn’t called on once during the game which tells its own story. Alan Campbell, Morgan Irwin (up to his half-time substitution) and David McGrath stood out in defence; Richie Power, especially in the opening half did plenty around the middle; while Liam Boland and Diarmuid Foley were the stars of the forwards. But it was a solid team performance and team manager Niall Fitzgerald will be pleased with this start.

Aherlow Gaels were short a few for selection and they looked a little behind in preparation compared to their opponents. They won’t need telling that they will have to do better in upcoming games against Arravale Rovers and Fethard. John Hanley stood out for his workrate and effort and there were other battling displays from John Hennessy, Lar Coskeran, Barry Grogan, Mark Russell and Mark O’Brien when he came on late, but like Moyle Rovers, if for different reasons, they won’t dwell on this one for too long.

South Intermediate Football Championship - MOYLE ROVERS 0-14 Mullinahone 1-10

Mullinahone opened the scoring with a point from a free, while Brian Norris, Shane Lonergan, Paul Shanahan & Luke Fogarty opened the rovers account with 5 points ( 4 from Play, 1 from a free) Mullinahone kicked 2 points from play , while shane lonergan replied with a great point from play.  Mullinahone battled back scoring 1-1 from Play.  We score 3 more Points from Sean Carey, Luke Delahunty & Shane Lonergan.  Mullinahone kicked one more point from play before the half time whistle.  Half time score Moyle Rovers 0-9 Mullinahone 1-5.   The second half was just as closely contested as the first, with the scores  eb and flowing from both sides.  Sean Carey, Shane Lonergan and Brian Norris Kicked 5 points between them in the second half.  Despite missing 2  goal chance from Padraic Kelly & Luke Delahunty, we managed to hold on for a one point victory.  Final Score Moyle Rovers 0-14 Mullinahone 1-10. 

Juvenile

U6's - Our U6's had lots of fun during their hurling training on Saturday last. Next week we will have football training from 11am to 12noon.

U7's & U8's - Training Tuesday and Friday 7pm - 8pm.

U12's - Hurling training Tuesday and Friday 7pm - 8pm.

Our U12 Group 4 team took on Clerihan in the south final on Sunday morning last.  We had a very young team in action Sunday morning but Cleirhan had the age, and experience advantage on the day, but this young group of boys have been excellant to follow so far this year.

Our 14 had a comfortable win over Knockmealdown Gael on Sunday last in the U14 Championship

Our U16 are due to take on Ballyporeen/Clonmel OG in the South Final, please fixtures tab for confirmed fixture and come along and support the lads.

Camogie.

The U12 girls played an amazing game against Moycarkey last Thursday evening played in Monroe. We had just twelve players as some of the girls were celebrating their confirmation. Lucy O'Brien stood up and offered to take the t goalie position and she played a stormer. Marguerite Buckley, Hazel Brennan and Holly Prout were outstanding at centre field. They were well supported by Rosie O'Reilly and Aine Phelan. Hannah Ryan showed great versatility by playing in defence and later moving to the forward line. Mia Cahalane made sure to clear the ball out from the back line and also scored a goal. Ava Gorey showed great courage with some excellent block downs. Jillian Cronin and Ava wall were the star scorers. The team were captained by Lauren Barlow. Well done girls. U12 training next Tuesday 7-8pm. The U14 training will begin again in the next couple of weeks to prepare the girls for the summer/autumn campaigns.
