Moyle Rovers               3.11                        Grangemockler/Ballyneale                  1.7

Moyle Rovers cruised  to victory to claim the clubs first south minor football A title in nine years when they blew away Grangemockler/Ballyneale with a three goal first half  blitz.

Two of those goals came in the opening six minutes and after that Grangemockler/Ballyneale were always fighting an uphill battle  in the south minor football final played in Cloneen this evening.

It was a superb team performance led by captain Cillian Crowe(pictured above receiving the trophy from south board officers Noel Byrne and Michael Cooney) and crowned by a superlative display from county minor Rian Quigley,.

In a first half master class Quigley hit an impressive 2.2 and tormented the Grangemockler defence every time he showed for the ball.

Quigley opened the scoring within a minute with a  converted free and four minutes later blasted to the roof of the net for the score of the game.

Quigley was also involved in the second goal a minute later when he moved swiftly onto a ball from Cathal McKeown before slipping in Luke Delahunty who cooly finished to the net.

2.2 to no score down inside ten minutes Grangemockler refused to buckle and responded with a point and a goal from a well taken penalty from centre back Manus McFadden after sixteen minutes.

Grangemockler, however were given no chance to build on that, and a minute later Moyle Rovers hit back when Quigley finished to the net again at the end of a free flowing move.

That goal proved to be the most important score of the game in that it shut down any momentum Grangemockler had created as a result of the penalty.

It gave Moyle Rovers a seven point lead  after seventeen minutes,a lead they never looked like relinquishing.

Grangemockler, driven by such powerful players as Denis Hanrahan, Mark o Meara,Manus McFadden,Jack Lyons and Michael Meaney, were unable to make any inroads on that seven point gap.

Rovers held a nine point lead at the interval and outscored their opponents by five points to four in a more even second half to run out comfortable winners in the end by ten points.

Grangemockler were overpowered in the first half when  Darragh Bolger, Diarmuid Mulcahy and Jack Harney ensured their team were dominant in the crucial areas.

Ben Owens and Luke Fogarty won the majority of Brian Quirke's excellent kick out's while Luke Delahunty with a goal and three points Sean Cotter, three points,Cathal McKeown, a point and Ronan Quickley kept the Grangemockler defence busy.

TheMoyle Rovers defence restricted  Grangemockler to  just one point from play scored  with three minutes remaining with the fullback line of   Michael Cleary,Conor McGrath and Brian Lacey working hard to limit the opportunities Grangemockler had in front of goal.

Our under 12 group 4, reached the South Semi-final against Commercials which took place last Sunday evening in Ballylooby.  John Cronin opened the scoring with a point from play. It took a few minutes to get the next point  from Luke Foley and another John Cronin point quickly followed. We were playing well as a quick ball went into Eoghan Whelan in the corner and he kick the ball across the goal and somehow dropped into the back of the net. Luke Foley stepped up for the next point and then our boys took over and showed some great open play.  John Cronin added 1-3 from play to leave us with a great lead at half time 2-7 to 0-0. As we were playing with a strong wind in the first half we needed this lead.  Commercials opened the 2nd half with a goal from play. With Commercials playing with the wind, our boys had to defend before a ball into Matthew Dowling was put over the bar to added to our score. Commercials managed one more point. The defense held well and the final whistle sounded to send us through to South final on a score line of 2-8 to 1-1.

Our under 12 group 1, were also in South Semi-final against Cahir last Sunday in Ballylooby. Cahir opened the scoring with a point from play and was soon answered by a point from play from Killian Butler and then Cahir took over scoring 1-7 unanswered  Cahir were playing with a very strong wind and we couldn’t get the ball out of defense.  Jake Forrestal stepped up to add a point from play and Cahir finished the half with a point from play. Half time score 1-9 to 0-2. Darragh Walsh opened the second half with a point from play and then came the sucker punch with goal from Cahir against the wind followed by a point to leave us chasing the game. Darragh Cronin added a point and then Cahir got through for another goal but our heads didn’t drop and we quickly answered with a goal from Paddy O Keeffe. Cahir again got through for another goal and again Paddy O Keeffe answered with another goal but we just couldn’t get close enough. Paddy  O Keeffe added another point and Cahir answered with a point to finish the game to win on a score line of 2-5 to 4-11. Well done to all involved.

U14's

Our under 14 footballers were up against Commercials last week. Oran Ryan opened our scoring with a goal from play and he quickly added a point to his tally. Rory Collins then got through for a great goal from play. We had all the play and our defense were playing excellent . Daire Luttrell  then added a point from play, Rory Collins and Oran Ryan added a point each before Peter McGarry stepped up to score a great goal from play. As the 1st half came to a close Commercials added their first score to leave the half time score 3-4  to 0-1.  Peter McGarry opened the second half with 2 points from play and then Commercials got a run and scored seven unanswered points. Peter McGarry added a point from a free and Commercials added their free.  Peter McGarry added 2 more points  and Commercials added 2 points before Rory Collins finished the half with a point from a 45. To leave the full time score 3-10 to 0-12.

Ladies Football

The seniors travelled to Clogheen Wednesday evening to play county Champions Brian Borus in the league championship. The game was a good lively contest with both sides giving it everything. Camogie

The juniors had the difficult assignment of playing Ballina in the county league in the Ragg on Saturday evening. Having to field with fourteen players against the opposition full team put us at an immediate disadvantage. Ballina blitzed us for two early goals and a point. The girls steadied themselves and gave as good as they got for the next twenty minutes keeping the game scoreless as both sides tried to get the upper hand. The numerical advantage was well managed by Ballina. They scored again before halftime to lead at the break. The second half played out to its inevitable conclusion and Ballina emerged decisive winners. Great credit to the Moyle Rovers girls who kept battling away to the end. This ends their involvement in the league campaign and they can look back with pride on their performances .Team  Caroline Quirke (C), Shania Dowling, Amy Norris, Eve Ryan, , Rosin Breen, Louise Norris, Emma Cronin, ,Aine Fitzgearld , Evrena Everard, Jenny Everard, Eimer Ryan , Sophie Delaney, Sinead Kenrick, Orla Ryan.
